The sessional GPs committee is part of the BMA's general practitioners' committee (GPC). We provide UK-wide and nation-specific representation for all salaried and locum GPs. Members come from a range of backgrounds and careers and draw on their knowledge and experience to fight for a fairer deal for sessional GPs. The committee considers all matters of interest for salaried and locum GPs and leads on all GPC issues that primarily affect sessional GPs.
Sessional GPs can draw on a varied range of representation and can approach their local medical committee, sessional GP committee of the BMA or the BMA's first point of contact, depending on the nature of the matter. GPs directly engaged by health boards will also be represented by their local negotiating committee (LNC - details of which can be found here).
Sessional GPs who are BMA members will already be receiving the bimonthly newsletter - if you are not receiving this, please ensure your place of work details are up to date in your account on the BMA website. Key events to watch out for in 2024 will be:
- the sessional GP week from 10th-16th June on the theme of empowering sessional GPs, during which we will be sending out themed advice daily to sessional GPs who are BMA members - key areas of advice will include working conditions, knowing your contract and safety and entitlements at work, so please be sure to update your details so that you receive these communications
- the second sessional conference at BMA House in September and we will be sending out communications regarding the conference as soon as the agenda has been finalised
